About Us

We are a partnership of local councils, train operators, station adoption and community groups encouraging greater use of the Derwent Valley Line rail service.

Derwent Valley Line Community Rail Partnership

What we do

  • Promote rail as a sustainable, accessible and healthy means of travel in the Derwent Valley
  • Support the local economy by encouraging sustainable travel and working with the local business community.
  • Engage the local community in the railway including making stations more welcoming
  • Work in partnership to deliver station and train service improvements

Our impact

We have helped secure a more frequent train service and made our stations more attractive and welcoming in partnership with station adopters, local community and the rail industry.

Our work has helped to triple passenger numbers on the Derwent Valley Line between 2003 and 2019.

We are committed to people re-discovering the Derwent Valley Line and supporting social and economic development as Covid-19 conditions allow.

Our Funders

Our train companies are committed to Community Rail with dedicated staff,  providing core funding and offering project funding. View further information about East Midlands Railway and CrossCountry Trains community rail work on their websites.

Core funding is also received from Amber Valley Borough Council, Derbyshire Dales District Council, Peak District National Park Authority and Derbyshire County Council, who also administer the Partnership.

The Partnership wishes to thank Community Rail Network, CrossCountry Trains and East Midlands Railway for funding towards this website.

Community Rail

Community Rail started in the late 1990’s to develop new ways to encourage more people to use their local rail lines. The movement has grown significantly, overseen by Community Rail Network (CRN) who support over 70 Community Rail Partnerships and over 1,000 station adoption groups.

The Department for Transport has supported Community Rail for nearly 20 years, working with CRN to administer the Community Rail Development Fund and more recently establishing Community Rail accreditation.  The Derwent Valley Line Community Rail Partnership has been  accredited since the scheme began in 2019.
