Between 1893 and 1927, a tram linked Crown Square with the Hydro’s at the top of Matlock Bank. Inspired by San Francisco, Matlock’s cable tramway had a 1 in 5 gradient and was probably the steepest in the world. The former tramway shelter is now situated at the entrance to Hall Leys Park.
